Join us this week as we sit down with George Lepine. Okimakhan (meaning ‘Teacher’ in the Plains Cree language) George Lepine has several decades of martial arts and fitness experience, and from an early age he learned historical games, hunting, trapping, tactics, and other traditional practices rooted in his Plains-Cree-Michif Indigenous heritage. He is also a direct descendant of Ambroise-Didyme Lepine, Adjutant-General to Louis Riel during the Red River Resistance of 1869–1870, a pivotal event that led to Manitoba entering Confederation.
In addition, Okimakhan Lepine has studied multiple martial arts including Judo (brown belt), Taekwondo (5th degree black belt), and Hapkido (6th degree black belt), while dedicating decades to researching Indigenous tactical applications, warfare, and combat practices from his traditional territory. Through extensive research, interviews with Elders and Keepers of Traditional Knowledge, and personal experience, he established Canada’s only structured Indigenous martial/combat arts system, O-ki-chi-taw — a combative art based on Northern Plains Indigenous techniques and tactics, including traditional weapons such as the tomahawk, lance, gunstock warclub, and knife. Based at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto, Okimakhan Lepine conducts seminars and workshops across North America and provides consulting for media and academic purposes, while continuing his work to preserve, revitalize, and professionally recognize Okichitaw on the world stage.
