Marigolds, traditional Indian flowers, were immersed into the Indian Ocean, at South Beach, this morning, as part of the commemoration of the 163rd arrival of the indentured labourers to South Africa.
A cross-section of the Indian community gathered at the historical site to pay tribute to their 1860 forefathers. The Consul General of India to Durban, Dr Thelma John David, was also in attendance. She spoke on the resilience of the indentured labourers and how they paved the way for the Indian community that thrives today.
The first indentured workers arrived on African shores aboard the SS Truro in 1860. Aboard 384 ships, 152, 184 souls were transported as human cargo from 1860 to 1911 to provide labour to grow the economy in KwaZulu-Natal.
Speaking further on the importance of this day was Selvan Naidoo, curator of the 1860 Heritage Centre.
