What is the Gospel?
In this sermon from 1 Corinthians 15:1–4, we are reminded that the gospel is not advice, self-help, or religious philosophy—it is God’s authoritative announcement of what He has accomplished in Jesus Christ. Drawing from the Baptist Orthodox Catechism, the Apostles’ Creed, and the whole testimony of Scripture, this message explores how the gospel has been revealed from paradise, proclaimed by the prophets, fulfilled in Christ, and entrusted to the church.
Paul reminds us that the gospel is of first importance: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. This good news confronts modern confusion about sin, salvation, and human nature, calling us back to a clear, historic, and biblical faith. More than the message that saves us, the gospel is the power by which we are continually being saved, sustained, and sanctified.
This sermon invites believers to recover confidence in the gospel, to live shaped by its truth, and to proclaim it boldly in a world full of competing “good news.”

Are all saved through Christ just as all were lost through Adam?

Christ and accept all his blessings. (a)
(a) Matt. 7:14; John 3:16, 18, 36; Rom. 11:16-21
Question 21:
What is true faith?
Answer:
True faith is not only a knowledge and conviction that everything God reveals in his Word is true; (a) it is also a deep rooted assurance, (b) created in me by the Holy Spirit (c) through the gospel, (d) that, out of sheer grace earned for us by Christ, (e) not only others, but I too, (f) have had my sins forgiven, have been made forever right with God, and have been granted salvation. (g)
(a) John 17:3, 17; Heb. 11:1-3; James 2:19
(b) Rom. 4:18-21; 5:1; 10:10; Heb. 4:14-16

(e) Rom. 3:21-26; Gal. 2:16; Eph. 2:8-10
(f) Gal. 2:20
(g) Rom. 1:17; Heb. 10:10
Question 22:
What then must a Christian believe?
Answer:
Everything God promises us in the gospel. (a) That gospel is summarized for us in the articles of our Christian faith--a creed beyond doubt, and confessed throughout the world. (a) Matt. 28:18-20; John 20:30-31
Question 23:
What are these articles?
Answer:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
