Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Thursday, reaffirming commitment to the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC-II). The leaders discussed the “five new corridors” aimed at expanding cooperation in industrial, digital, and agricultural sectors.
PM Shehbaz praised CPEC’s contribution to Pakistan’s socio-economic development and called for swift implementation of key infrastructure projects, including the ML-1 railway upgrade, Karakoram Highway realignment, and Gwadar Port operationalisation. Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for Pakistan’s development agenda and pledged to upgrade CPEC and the Free Trade Agreement. The meeting also highlighted ongoing educational exchanges and China’s $3.4bn loan rollover to stabilise Pakistan’s reserves.
