This session is a part of the Child Rights in the Palm Oil Industry webinar.
What are the Realities and Aspirational Standards?
This session discusses the key concerns relating to family life on oil palm plantations that help paint a picture of the reality of the context we are working in and the international conventions (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) / ILO Conventions, UNICEF Children’s Rights and Business Principles (CRBP), UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights) that address child labour and employment to demonstrate the gap between where we are and where we should be, and how these are translated into RSPO principles; and introduce RSPO certification & tools for companies seeking to acquire certification.

I have been working with undocumented, stateless and marginalised children for the past 12 years in Sabah, Malaysia. We have almost 1,000 chldren in 11 learning centres around Sabah.
I am a New Zealander living in Sabah for the past 43 years and have been in education all my working life, principal then director of schools before setting up learning centres for children in Sabah who are prevented from acquiring an education.
My doctoral thesis was focussed on curriculum for marginalised communities in Sabah. I believe these communities, through education, can break the cycle of poverty and discrimination that constantly besets them.
