WARNING- This movie portrays perfectly the magic thinking that lures kids into addictive behavior. This psychological movie review of Luca, by Pixar, looks at the inner message that breaking all the rules will be justified in the end.
I loved the movie in terms of the story telling and artistic design. However, the message is dangerous because it tells children when it comes to dealing with their own internal shame monster they can break all the rules, and all will be forgiven.
Well, the first thing he learns is that, yes parents are always telling us their boundaries and rules are to keep us safe from life's dangers. But he quickly learned, what the parents didn't say was how good it feels to break the rules. They said don't use drugs, alcohol, or pornography, but they did not tell you how good it feels when you do use them.
The movie also teaches Luca, and your child, if they develop a conscience that tells them what they are doing is wrong or danger, that you can simply tell it to shut up, and keep doing what you are doing.
Watch the movie with your children, but go through each part and correct the messages that are being promoted by the film.
