Mars has 4 seasons just like Earth.
But they are longer, colder, and dustier.
Let’s walk through each season on Mars.
1. Winter on Mars
"Mars becomes so cold that air freezes into snow and falls."
✅ This is 100% true!
Mars has very thin air — mostly carbon dioxide (CO₂), like the gas in soda.
In winter, the pole facing away from the Sun gets super cold — colder than Antarctica!
The CO₂ gas in the air freezes and turns into tiny snowflakes (like dry ice).
These fall and pile up on the poles, making huge white ice caps grow bigger.
It’s so cold (down to -130°C / -200°F) that even the ground freezes hard.
Rovers like Perseverance “take a nap” in winter to save battery!
2. Summer on Mars
"In summer, snow melts into air on a large scale and dust storms wake up."
✅ Perfect! This really happens.
The Sun shines strong on one side of Mars.
The frozen CO₂ snow at the poles starts to warm up.
It doesn’t melt into water — it jumps straight into gas (called sublimation).
POOF! Tons of CO₂ goes back into the air → the sky gets a little thicker.
The ground warms up (up to 20°C / 68°F near the equator — like a cool spring day on Earth!).
Huge dust storms start!
Wind blows red dust everywhere.
Sometimes, one storm covers the whole planet for weeks!
Mars turns orange in the sky — like a dusty sunset everywhere.
In 2018, a dust storm was so big, the rover Opportunity “went to sleep” forever.
3. Spring on Mars
"In spring, winds start to blow and little tornadoes spin around with dust, making Mars colorful."
✅ Yes! This is real and beautiful!
The Sun comes back, ice starts turning to gas.
Warm air and cold air mix → strong winds blow.
Dust devils appear — like mini tornadoes made of dust!
They spin fast, pick up red and black dust, and dance across the land.
Some are as tall as skyscrapers!
The ground shows red, brown, black, and even blue-gray colors where ice is gone.
Mars looks alive and colorful — not just red!
NASA cameras catch dust devils all the time — they leave dark trails on the ground!
4. Fall on Mars
Days get shorter, nights get colder.
Winds slow down, dust storms calm.
CO₂ in the air starts freezing again at the poles.
The planet gets quiet and chilly, getting ready for winter.
Why Do Seasons Last 6 or 7 Months?
"Every season sticks to 6 or 7 months because a year on Mars is twice as Earth."
✅ Almost perfect!
1 Mars year = 687 Earth days→ That’s almost 2 Earth years (1.88 to be exact).
So, Mars takes twice as long to go around the Sun.
That’s why each season lasts 6 to 7 Earth months.
Season (Northern Hemisphere)Length (Earth days)Spring~194 daysSummer~178 daysFall~142 daysWinter~154 days
Southern hemisphere seasons are flipped in length and strength!
Final Simple Summary
Mars has seasons like Earth.
Winter: Air freezes into snow and falls on the poles.
Summer: Snow melts into air, dust storms wake up.
Spring: Winds blow, dust tornadoes spin, Mars gets colorful.
Each season = 6 or 7 months because 1 Mars year = nearly 2 Earth years.
