District Bilaspur
1. Govind Sagar
Type: Artificial lake (reservoir).
Location: Between Slappar and Bhakra villages.
Origin: Formed by the Bhakra Dam (the world's highest gravity dam) on the river Satluj.
Statistics: Approximately 168 sq.km area; 88 km in length.
Significance:
Described by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru as a 'New temple of Resurgent India'.
Known for water sports and fishing (country's largest fishing pond).
Key Issues:
Severe siltation has caused fish production to drop by nearly 50%.
Silt sources include upstream dams (Karcham Wangtu, Kol Dam), cement plant mining sites, and road construction in catchment areas of the Sutlej and its tributaries.
District Chamba
2. Ghadasaru Lake
Location: 24 kms from Tissa (which is 72 Kms from Chamba).
Altitude: 3505 msl (mean sea level).
Features: Circumference of nearly 1 km.
Significance: Visited by locals to offer prayers at a Kali temple on its bank.
3. Khajjiar Lake
Location: 24 km from Dalhousie. Situated in the center of a grassy meadow surrounded by cedar forest.
Altitude: 1951 mts.
Also Known As: The Kund; 'Mini Switzerland' (officially christened on July 7, 1992, by Swiss Envoy Willy P. Blazer).
Features:
Formed by ancient glaciation.
Contains a tiny floating island covered with reeds.
Home to a temple dedicated to 'Khajjiar Nag'.
Remains full of water year-round without relying on rainwater.
Management: Designated as a "special development area" managed by the Khajjiar Development Board to handle beautification, weed/silt removal, and regulation of activities like grazing and horse riding.
4. Lama Dal Lake
Location: Inner slopes of Dhauladhar range; 45 kms from Chamba and 20 km from Dainkund.
Altitude: 3962 meters (13200 feet).
Features: The largest of a group of seven lakes (approx. 2 sq km area). Surrounded by perennial glaciers.
Significance: Considered sacred with unknown depth. Visited by Gaddi tribals on Janmashtami.
5. Manimahesh Lake
Location: 35 kms from Bharmaur, at the foot of Mount Kailash.
Altitude: 3950 metres.
Significance: Perhaps the highest sacred water in Chamba district. Believed to be blessed by Kali and protected by Lord Shiva. An annual fair is held in August/September.
6. Mahakali Lake
Location: Churah area of Chamba district.
Altitude: 3657 metres.
Features: Larger than both Khajjiar and Manimahesh lakes. Dedicated to goddess Kali.
7. Chanderkup Lake
Location: Upper regions of Chamba towards Dharamshala.
Altitude: The text states "3450 mts (14000 feet)". [Note: There is a discrepancy in the text, as 3450 meters converts to roughly 11,300 feet, not 14,000 feet.]
Features: Situated at the highest altitude in the Dhauladhar range. It has rough terrain, is covered by snow most of the time, and features floating ice blocks in summer.
District Kangra
8. Dal Lake (Bhagsunag Lake)
Location: 11 kms from Dharamshala.
Altitude: 1775 meters above msl.
Features: Surrounded by hills and fir trees.
Significance: Features a temple to 'Lord Driveshwar' built by sage Agastaya. A fair known as 'Radhashtami' takes place here 15 days after Janmashtami.
