Anchorage School District survey: Option 1 vs. Option 2

We are developing school calendars for the following three years:

2026–2027
2027–2028
2028–2029

Your feedback will help determine a few key dates. We are providing two options for your consideration. Here's a quick guide to help you compare the two options before submitting your input:

Focus on the 2027–2028 School Year
While the survey includes calendars for three school years, only the 2027–2028 calendar options are different because it's not an election year.

Statewide Elections
In years when there are state elections, students will not have school on voting days to help keep everyone safe, because schools are used as voting places open to the public. Both 2026–2027 and 2028–2029 are statewide election years, which limits scheduling flexibility in those years.

Start of the School Year 2027
Option 1: Teachers return on Friday, August 13, 2027 the week before students start.

Option 2: Teachers return on Thursday, August 12, 2027 which shifts the start of the school year one day earlier.
These options are for your consideration because educators have shown interest in returning to school the week before students, so they have more time to get ready.

Veterans Day 2027
Option 1:

Veterans Day remains a school closure day for students and a professional development day for staff—similar to past years.
Option 2:

Veterans Day becomes a full closure day for both students and staff. The professional development day normally held on Veterans Day is moved to the last week of October, creating a four-day block that includes:

Two days of parent-teacher conferences
Two professional development days

We recommend opening both Option 1 and Option 2 calendars while completing the survey.
The survey will guide you through questions about the differences, and having both options visible will make it easier to share your preferences.
