"Beneath a quiet chapel in the Czech town of Kutná Hora lies one of the most haunting works of art in human history. The Sedlec Ossuary—better known as the “Bone Church”—is adorned with the remains of more than 40,000 people, arranged into chandeliers, garlands, monstrances, and even a noble family's coat of arms.
In the 1870s, Czech woodcarver František Rint was commissioned to transform the ossuary’s massive collection of bones into something meaningful—and unsettling. What he created wasn’t just macabre; it was a Baroque meditation on mortality. Every bone in the human body is represented in the chapel’s centerpiece chandelier. Skulls form patterns in the walls. A raven pecks a skull in the Schwarzenberg family crest—built entirely from human remains.
This episode explores how a medieval burial ground became one of the world’s most unique tourist destinations, and how Rint turned death into design. It’s beautiful. It’s disturbing. And it’s unforgettable.
