This film was created to explain how forest fires are fought in BC in 1970. It has very much a film with the ethos of man and technology versus nature.
On many levels, the technology in use is still very similar on the front line of a fire but a lot has changed in the last 44 years.
What has changed:
No more lookouts
Communications are much improved
Thermal sensing exists now
There is less use of airplanes to water bomb and more use of helicopters these days. The film mentions the Martin Mars, the Avenger and the Canso, none of which are in use any longer. Helicopters can retrieve water closer to the fire and therefore bucket more water in a short time. A helicopter can also aim the water much more closely than any airplane
Prescribed burning still exists but it is used much less than in the 1960s
The idea of dropping small crews into remote areas that have to survive on their own is no longer used
7:45 - The film makes reference to a fire having the energy of several atomic bombs. I can not imagine anyone doing that in 2014
13:30 - seems spotting planes used to use rolls of toilet paper to mark fire locations
14:25 - Prepackaged provisions can be dropped by parachute
This production is one of a collection of historical films and videos that were digitized as part of the celebration of the centenary of the BC Forest Service in 2012. Digitization was done through a grant from the UBC Ike Barber Learning Centre and funding from the BC Forest Service Centenary Society.
