"Originally released by the pop rock band Alaska y Dinarama in 1986, “A Quién Le Importa” became an anthem for the Spanish-speaking LGBT+ community. Across the ocean, Mexican pop singer Thalia included her own cover of the song in her 2002 album and filmed an accompanying music video, showing just how far the song had spread. More than just an electro-disco bundle of camp, though, “A Quién Le Importa” carries a motivational message that has helped it endure over the decades. The up-tempo song speaks of a person who feels pressured by society to be and act a certain way, but who knows deep down that their destiny and way of life cannot — and should not — change. The chorus asks “Who cares what I do? Who cares what I say?” It’s a timeless — and timely — message for those who feel excluded. It’s also a call for tolerance for everyone" (From Who cares? #WorldPride2017 brings together Eurovision stars for “A Quién Le Importa” cover" (Raphael Hallerman) — wiwibloggs, wiwibloggs.com).
Lyrics
La gente me señala,
Me apunta con el dedo,
Susurra a mis espaldas,
Y a mí me importa un bledo.
People signal towards me,
They point at me with their fingers,
They whisper behind my back,
And I don't give a damn.
Qué más da
Si soy distinta a ellos?
No soy de nadie, no tengo dueño.
What more can be said
If I'm different from them?
I'm not anybody's, I have no owner.
Yo sé que me critican,
Me consta que me odian,
La envidia les corroe,
Mi vida les agobia.
I know they criticize me,
It's clear to me that they hate me,
The envy corrodes them,
My life depresses them.
¿Por qué será?
Yo no tengo la culpa.
Mis circunstancias les insultan.
Why would that be?
It's not my fault. [*lit. I don't have the fault]
My circumstances insult them.
Mi destino es el que yo
Decido, el que yo
Elijo para mí.
My destiny is the one that I
Decide, the one that I
Choose for myself.
