Although the Tokaido Shinkansen with its white with blue line trains have long been an icon of Japan and its technology, the Tohoku Shinkansen that is operated by JR East and goes North from Tokyo to Shin Aomori (with some trains going thru to the Hokkaido Shinkansen, Yamagata Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen).
The Tohoku Shinkansen also has a higher maximum operating speed of 320km/h compared to Tokaido Shinkansen's 285km/h (although on both these lines this is the max speed in certain sections). JR East's shinkansen trains are also more comfortable, and many trains have "Gran Class" a premium first class car as well as the Green Car (first class).
