The Illyrian Wars were a series of conflicts fought between the Roman Republic and the powerful Illyrian tribes along the Adriatic coast during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE. These wars marked Rome’s first major involvement in the Balkans and set the stage for its later dominance over Greece and Macedonia. The Illyrians, led at times by Queen Teuta, controlled vital trade routes and practiced piracy, which brought them into direct conflict with Rome’s growing power.

This documentary covers all three Roman–Illyrian Wars, exploring how Rome confronted Illyrian piracy, defeated Queen Teuta, and gradually expanded its influence in the region. It explains the political tensions, military campaigns, and alliances that shaped the struggle for control of the Adriatic. By the end of these wars, Rome had firmly established itself in the Balkans, paving the way for its conquest of the Hellenistic world.
