A million sockeye filled the Kenai River… and there I was, float fishing, feeling like the odd one out. Friendly guides and anglers offered to set me up with flossing rigs, but I politely declined. I wasn’t there just to catch fish fast, I was there for the challenge, the fun, and the perfect float drop.
After four salmon seasons catching a few sockeye on egg clusters, spawn sacks, cured eggs, and my hand-tied marabou jigs, I’d never landed one on the Kenai… until now.
I tried jigs, soft beads, and even a spinner under a float. Guess what worked? Soft beads!
The secret? Timing and location. Find a resting school of sockeye, not runners. One out of a million might just be willing to strike.
This is a personal milestone for me because I’ve often heard Kenai fishermen say that fresh Kenai sockeye don’t bite while we catch them in Knik. I worked hard to prove it to myself.
Join me on this Centerpin float fishing adventure on Alaska’s Kenai River. Tight lines!
