CJI Chandrachud recalls daily struggles of specially-abled daughters; calls for inclusive policies

Описание: CJI DY Chandrachud on September 28 attended the 9th Annual National Stakeholders Consultation on 'Protecting the Rights of Children living with Disability (focus on CiCL and CNCP) and Intersectionality of Disabilities' where addressing the audience he highlighted the challenges faced by children with disabilities emphasizing the need for inclusive school policies. While addressing the issue, he gave examples of his two specially abled daughters and the difficulties faced by them on a daily basis. CJI Chandrachud, further urged stakeholders to address these critical issues to ensure equitable access for all students.
Addressing the event, he said, “Our daughters suffer from a disease called Nemaline myopathy. How will the other children treat these children in school? And does the school have any sense of policy to ensure that these children are not bullied and disparaged? Because that would set them back. The principals of many schools told us that children are children, so they'll have to survive amongst other children...Another problem which so many of these children with disability face in school is that when you mainstream these children because they are capable of being mainstreamed, you realise that there are very few facilities to accommodate the real needs of children. So, if a child is fond of and the science lab is in a basement, the child can't go to the science lab for the reason that there is no ramp or lift...”
