Former president Park Geun-hye now finds herself behind bars after a Seoul court approved her arrest in connection to a sprawling political scandal that also led to her impeachment. She was once known to the Korean public as the daughter of former president Park Chung-hee, residing in the presidential compound for 16 years while her father was in power. After her mother was killed in an assassination attempt of her father, she took on the role as first lady, but five years later, Park Chung-hee was fatally shot. With this, Park Geun-hye moved out of Cheong Wa Dae and began a life in relative seclusion.

From 'queen of elections' to ousted president
For 18 years, Park Geun-hye stayed mostly out of the public eye. However, in December of 1997, she joined the Grand National Party. The following year, she was elected to the National Assembly, launching her political career in earnest. In the 17th and 19th general elections, Park led her party to victory, earning herself the title 'queen of elections.' Fifteen years after entering politics, she became Korea's first female president, vowing to open an era of happiness for the people. However, her unexpected downfall stemmed from a corruption scandal, which led to her impeachment and now an impending criminal trial.

'비운의 영애' 박근혜
지난 3월 31일. 박근혜 전 대통령이 전격 구속됐다. 탄핵된 지 3주 만에 구치소에 수감되는 신세가 된 것이다. 대통령의 딸로 태어나 최초의 여성 대통령으로 당선됐던 박근혜 전 대통령. 4년 동안 대한민국의 수장이었던 그녀가 피의자로 전락하면서 외신은 그녀의 인생 전반에 높은 관심을 보였다. 1963년, 아버지의 대통령 당선과 함께 박 전 대통령은 '대통령의 영애'로 살아가기 시작했다. 1974년 어머니 육영수 여사가 흉탄에 숨지면서, 박 전 대통령은 아버지 박정희 전 대통령 옆에서 퍼스트레이디의 역할을 하게 된다. 5년 뒤, 아버지마저 피살되면서 박 전 대통령은 16년간 살아왔던 청와대를 떠나게 됐다.

박근혜 전 대통령의 정치 인생 20년
청와대를 떠난 뒤 박근혜 전 대통령은 이후 18년 동안 은둔의 시간을 보냈다. 박 전 대통령이 다시 대외활동을 시작한 건 1997년 12월, 한나라당에 입당하면서부터다. 이듬해 4월, 국회의원 보궐선거에서 승리하며 박 전 대통령은 정식으로 정계에 입문했다. '정치인' 박근혜의 삶이 시작된 것이다. 이후, 박 전 대통령은 17대, 19대 총선에서 자신이 소속된 당의 승리를 이끌어내며 '선거의 여왕'이란 별명을 얻기도 했다. 그리고 정치에 입문한 지 15년 만인 2012년 12월, 그녀는 '국민 행복 시대'를 열겠다는 포부를 안고 마침내 대통령에 당선됐다. 그러나 '최순실 게이트'의 여파로 대통령 자리에서 '탄핵'되는 운명을 맞게 됐는데... 이번 주 에선 박근혜 전 대통령의 굴곡진 65년 인생을 재조명해본다.
