With Anne's cooperation, the sheriff wiretapped her phone, capturing Winnie cryptically admitting knowledge of Edward's body. This led to a search of the old outhouse site, where human remains were found in December 1979.
The next day, Winnie was found dead by suicide, leaving behind a confession that she had murdered and dismembered Edward, dumping his body in the outhouse—likely due to his infidelity. The case was closed after her death.
