Title : They Put a P-39 Cannon on a Tiny Boat — The Japanese Called Them ‘Devil Boats
Summary : On the morning of May 23, 1944, near the village of Carano, Italy, American infantry advancing from the Anzio beachhead faced a sudden and deadly German counterattack. Rolling across open ground came Tiger tanks—nearly sixty tons of steel, armed with devastating 88mm guns capable of stopping an entire battalion. Standard doctrine said infantry should withdraw and wait for armor or artillery. But that morning, there was no time.
Technical Sergeant Van Barfoot, a 24-year-old infantryman of the 45th Infantry Division, understood what the Tigers meant. If they advanced unchecked, the fragile breakout from Anzio would collapse. Crawling forward alone under fire, Barfoot seized a discarded bazooka and prepared to do what doctrine considered nearly impossible.
At roughly 75 yards, beyond recommended range, Barfoot fired. The rocket struck the lead Tiger’s track, ripping it apart and immobilizing the tank. The remaining Tigers immediately withdrew, their momentum broken. What should have been a crushing armored counterattack ended in seconds.
But Barfoot didn’t stop. He advanced alone again, destroying a German field gun that threatened American troops, then carried two severely wounded soldiers nearly a mile each—one at a time—across open ground under artillery fire. Both men survived.
Barfoot’s actions that day removed multiple threats, preserved the advance, and saved lives at a moment when every second mattered. His courage was not reckless heroics, but calculated action under extreme pressure. For his actions at Anzio, Van Barfoot was awarded the Medal of Honor—not for one moment, but for a chain of decisions that turned the tide when failure seemed inevitable.
