Descending Limb:
The descending limb is highly permeable to water, allowing water to move out of the filtrate and into the surrounding tissues, increasing the concentration of the filtrate.
Ascending Limb:
The ascending limb is impermeable to water but actively transports sodium and chloride ions out of the filtrate, diluting the filtrate and contributing to the concentration gradient.
Concentration Gradient:
The loop of Henle creates a high concentration of solutes in the medulla, which allows the collecting duct to reabsorb water and produce concentrated urine.
