In this edition of "Client Spotlight," we sit down with Justin LP, the marketing coordinator for Local Cannabis, a retailer in Vancouver. Local Cannabis differentiates itself by staying true to the legacy of BC Craft Cannabis, featuring a lot of direct delivery on its menu, and focusing on premium small-batch cannabis. They also aim to transition users from the gray and black markets over to legal sales by fostering a sense of community.
Justin shares his experience switching to Breadstack, highlighting the drastic improvement in support compared to their previous developers. He discusses his role, which includes managing social media, the website, email, paid marketing, SEO, and content creation.41
Key topics of discussion include:
SEO and Content Creation: Justin details his strategy for optimizing the website for search. He mentions optimizing a delivery page, humanizing AI-generated content, learning about rich text snippets (schema) for Google, and the importance of updating product page content and reviews. He takes custom pictures of products every Friday and inserts metadata for all images.
SEO Results: Their efforts have led to significant ranking success; for example, their Advent calendar shot up 750% in ranking, making them one of the top search results. The site has also achieved high rankings for specific products, even beating Reddit in one search.
E-Transfer Payments: Local Cannabis offers e-transfer as a payment option, which is popular with shoppers who previously used the gray market. They receive e-transfers every day.
Sales Increase and the BCGEU Strike: Local Cannabis launched Breadstack in September. Two weeks later, the BCGEU strike occurred. Breadstack helped the store remain searchable and visible when other stores were closing. During the strike, they saw around 100 to 120 new transactions every week, and their delivery transactions doubled. Their busiest week saw 60 deliveries, compared to only 10 to 15 a week before switching to Breadstack.
Delivery Program: The store uses time windows for delivery. They use different minimum order amounts based on postal code to serve areas like Vancouver (minimum $50), UBC and Downtown (minimum $100), North and West Vancouver (minimum $150), and Surrey and Langley (minimum $200). They do not charge a separate delivery fee, instead relying on the minimum order quantity to make the delivery worthwhile.
Order Management and CanFleet: Justin describes the delivery process, which involves a tablet using the CanFleet app that rings upon a new Bread Stack order. CanFleet automatically assigns a driver. The CanFleet app is smart, tracking kilometers and prioritizing deliveries based on time, considering traffic. The process includes double-checking the order by two people, and the driver takes a picture before leaving and uses the app for the customer's signature at the door.
Direct Delivery: The conversation also includes an explanation of "direct delivery" in BC, which allows small growers to ship directly to retailers, enabling stores to differentiate their menu with hard-to-find, exclusive, small-batch products. This method helps maintain the quality of temperature-sensitive products like rosin, as producers can use coolers for transport.
