The small town of La Fortuna, San Carlos, Costa Rica, is located in the province of Alajuela and is known for its explosive history. Literally.

But what makes La Fortuna so unique? It's the Arenal Volcano which had been inactive for over 400 years. However, in 1968 the Arenal Volcano came to life.

In fact, the town was almost completely destroyed by an eruption on July 29th, 1968, at 7:30 am. The eruption covered 15 kilometers or 9.3 miles with ash, rocks, and lava killing 87 people and sadly burying 3 villages.

But the town rose from the ashes, and today it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica! Visitors and locals could see lava flowing from Arenal Volcano up until 2010. Now, Arenal Volcano is still active and is the center point of the beautiful city.
