Thanksgiving Day 2024. We want to take a moment to wish everyone, with whatever family and/or friends you may assemble today, or just in the company of oneself, in whatever way you gather today to rest and be thankful for the life around you, we wish you a happy and memorable Thanksgiving. With the festivities, football games, Macy's Parade and such, the holiday season is official on, and off and running now in full force.
Each Thanksgiving holiday extended weekend, we always like to present a near week-long special presentation of a television series or special that we think really exemplifies the best of the best of that particular television season. In past years, we've paid Thanksgiving week tribute to television series and specials such as: The Ed Sullivan Show, Ironside, Elvis '68 Comeback Special, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, The Bob Newhart Show and The Girl With Something Extra.
This year, we continue that tradition with our Thanksgiving Holiday special presentation of our look back at Police Woman, starring Angie Dickinson. Ms. Dickinson is one of our favorites here at Television Vanguard, and today we present a retrospective of the series, with interviews with Ms. Dickson, husband Burt Bacharach and co-star Earl Holliman.
We also want to note, as we did yesterday, of the passing of Earl Holliman, who died Monday in Los Angeles following a brief illness. He was 96. Mr. Holliman had a fine career on stage, film and television. In the 1950s, we was featured in films ranging from the John Wayne lead The Sons of Katie Elder, to the Burt Lancaster/Katherine Hepburn lead film The Rainmaker. He also was in the Sci-Fi classic The Forbidden Planet, as well as the Rock Hudson/Elizabeth Taylor/James Dean lead movie Giant.
On television, Holliman starred in the premiere episode of The Twilight Zone. He starred in a couple of television westerns (Hotel de Paree and Widecountry) in the early 1960s, but neither show caught fire and were not renewed beyond a single season. He then segued to the theater and toured the country with the production of the musical Oklahoma!, playing Curly McLain.
He guest starred in many television series during the late 1960s and early 1970s, including Bonanza, The Virginian, Ironside, The FBI, It Takes a Thief, The Streets of San Francisco and Police Story.
It was his appearance on Police Story with Angie Dickinson that lead to Mr. Holliman's best known work - that of Lt. Bill Crowley on the Police Woman television series, which ran from 1974 to 1978.
Holliman would go on to more theater touring work in the 1980s. and would co-star in the television series 'Delta', starring Delta Burke, in the early 1990s. He would star in one more series, this one for the television syndication market, Nightman, in 1997.
Rest in peace Earl - and thank you for a job well done!
Enjoy!
