"The Kind of Music You Want"
Porter Heaps, speaker and organist
Produced by Columbia Records as a 7-inch promotional LP for the Hammond Organ Company, on matrices ZCTV 8906 and ZCTV 8907. The date is unknown, but my guess is around 1957, for it was in April of that year that Porter Heaps' first LP for Columbia, "My Beautiful Lady" (CL 962) was released.
After a speech about the Hammond organ aimed at prospective buyers with no musical experience, which I find quite funny (though surely this was unintentional), Mr. Heaps plays a medley of four selections:
When You Were Sweet Sixteen (at 6:00)
Cielito Lindo (at 6:50)
Silent Night (at 8:11)
William Tell Overture (at 9:29)
Illinois-born Porter Heaps (1906-1999) was a student of Marcel Dupre. He was associated with the Hammond Organ Company for some 40 years, bringing the instruments built by that company an aura of respectability that they lacked when they were introduced in the 1930s.
