Eosinophilia refers to a higher level of eosinophils in the tissue or body.
Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell. They helps to fight off infections and play a role in your body's immune response.
Normal range of Eosinophils is 1 -6% (i.e) 4 - 400 cells / cubic millimetre.
Eosinophils count may increase due to some allergic reaction, cancer, or parasitic infection.
Causes :
There are numerous reasons your eosinophil count may be elevated.
1. Parasite Infections.
2.Drug Reactions.
Certain Medications can trigger eosinophilia, such as Antibiotics.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
Anti-seizure drugs.
3. Atopy.
Allergic reaction occur due to asthma.
Allergic rhinitis, eczema.
Some kind of food allergies can also cause elevated eosinophil counts.
4. Cancer.
Cancers that cause eosinophilia include Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and certain myeloproliferative neoplasms.
If the number of eosinophils is only slightly elevated, people usually do not have symptoms.
However, sometimes, particularly when the number of eosinophils is very high, the increased number of eosinophils inflames tissues and causes organ damage.
Symptoms :
Symptoms of eosinophilia are generally related to the underlying condition, may include:
Wheezing.
Breathlessness.
Coughing.
Abdominal pain.
Diarrhea.
Fever.
Rashes.
Diagnosis :
A complete blood count to check the level of eosinophils in the blood.
Stool tests to rule out parasitic infection.
