At the entrance of Dubai's Tilal Al Furjan residential complex, a groundbreaking 3D-printed building has emerged, standing as a fully functional gatehouse. Developed by Nakheel, this innovative structure serves as the control center for the residential community, and more importantly, as a distinctive landmark introducing the public to the realm of 3D-printed buildings.

Printstone3D, a Dubai-based 3D printing technology for construction company, spearheaded the project, showcasing the potential of their cutting-edge techniques. The gatehouse, boasting a canopy nearly three times the size of the building itself, features a sophisticated communications hub housing CCTV cameras, utility meters, and a complex network of over 90 cables and pipes with varying functionalities and diameters, all ingeniously accommodated within a confined space.

Printstone3D's CEO, Nikolay Kudryashov, revealed the company's focus on one-to-two storey residential buildings. He highlighted the efficiency of their 3D printing process, noting that a 120sqm villa or house can be printed in just two weeks. As Dubai aims to have 25% of its buildings constructed using 3D printing technology by 2030, Kudryashov mentioned the ongoing development of new-generation printers capable of constructing buildings up to six-eight storeys.

Remarkably, the gatehouse project, completed in just 20 days, required only a three-member crew. This team comprised a printer operator, mixing machine operator, and labor assistant, showcasing the efficiency and eco-friendly nature of 3D printing technology. Kudryashov emphasized that this contrasts sharply with traditional construction methods, which typically involve 15 to 25 skilled workers for a project of similar magnitude.

Dubai's Planning and Development Department Trakhees, the regulatory body overseeing the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), issued the first license for construction using 3D printing technology for buildings in Dubai. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the PCFC, emphasized the transformative nature of 3D printing, which relies on a robotic arm to directly print layers of cement-based material onto a prepared surface, significantly reducing labor costs by up to 80% and slashing construction project durations by 60%.
