A deadly shooting at a high school in the Austrian city of Graz has left 10 people dead, including the suspected gunman, and at least 12 others injured, according to initial reports.
Police spokesperson Fritz Grundnig confirmed that a shooting occurred at a school located on Dreierschützengasse in Graz. Authorities announced that 10 people, including the perpetrator, were killed in the attack.
In response to the incident, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker canceled all scheduled engagements, while Interior Minister Gerhard Karner immediately traveled to Graz.
According to Austrian media, the attacker — who reportedly killed nine individuals before taking his own life in a school restroom — was a former student of the institution. It is alleged that he had been subjected to bullying.
School Evacuated, Situation Under Control
In a statement on social media platform X, the police department of the federal state of Styria (Steiermark) confirmed that the situation was under control and no further threat was present. The injured were taken to local hospitals, and police units secured the area. The school was evacuated, and students and staff were relocated to a designated gathering point.
National Mourning and Condolences
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen expressed his sorrow on X, stating:
"This horror is beyond words. What happened today at a school in Graz has shaken the heart of our nation."
He emphasized that Austria is in mourning and stands in solidarity with all those suffering.
Chancellor Stocker described the event as a "national tragedy" that deeply affected the entire country.
"Words fall short to describe the grief shared by all Austrians," he said, offering his condolences to the families of the victims and urging national unity.
Three Days of National Mourning Declared
At a press conference held in Graz, Chancellor Stocker confirmed the death toll of 10, including the attacker. He emphasized the importance of national solidarity and announced a three-day mourning period across Austria.
Interior Minister Karner stated that the shooter, who was a 21-year-old Austrian from the Graz area and a former student of the school, killed 9 victims — 6 female and 3 male — before dying by suicide. He added that at least 12 people were injured, some critically.
Police official Gerald Ortner confirmed that the attacker committed suicide in the school’s restroom. He had no prior criminal record and carried out the attack using a legally owned long-barreled firearm and a handgun. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
