Increasing threat for Tanks

DRDO’s Laser Warning Receiver

As per latest report from “The Tribune”, DRDO is developing a new advanced laser threat detection system for armoured fighting vehicles meant to enhance the survivability of combat platforms in the battlefield. Earlier, Laser Science and Technology Centre, New Delhi, had produced a laser threat detection system for the indigenously developed Arjun main battle tank.

The system will comprise sensors and processing units retrofitted on armoured vehicles like tanks and mechanised infantry combat vehicles to detect the use of lasers by the enemy for detection and target acquisition and to take countermeasures. The project is being executed by DRDO’s Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE) at Dehradun.

DRDO’s LWR will be able to detect threats at ranges up to six kilometres. It will have four sensors mounted on the vehicle’s turret at different places to provide a 360-degree coverage to detect threats from sources such as laser range finders, laser target designators and laser munition guiding beams. The control units and display screens will be mounted inside, adjacent to the commander’s console, and give out an audio and visual warning to the crew, classify the type of threat and enable them to take countermeasures such as firing smoke grenades to obscure the vehicle and move to a different location.

New Commander Sight for T-90 Bhishma

In order to further improve the effectiveness of main battle tanks, there is also need of enhanced situational awareness using latest optical sensors. On 24th February, MoD has signed a contract worth Rs. 1075 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the retro-modification of Commander Sight of Battle Tanks-T-90. The retro-modification will be carried out in 957 T-90 tanks of the Indian Army. Commander sight of T-90 tanks which is at present fitted with Image Converter (IC) tube-based sight for night viewing.

New Thermal Sight by DRDO & BEL

Based on the requirement projected by the Indian Army, DRDO and BEL have jointly designed and developed an advanced Mid Wave Thermal Image (MWIR) based sight as a replacement for the existing IC-based sight. MKU Ltd – a private defence firm has also received the Transfer of Technologies of Driver Night Sight for T-90 Tanks from DRDO in February 2022.

Simulated Test & Interrogator Kit (STIK)

Beside the commander sight, The technology for ‘Simulated Test & Interrogator Kit (STIK) for T-90 Tank’ was also transferred to Opto Electronics Factory, a unit of India Optel Limited, Dehradun. The Kit will be used to check the readiness of the guided weapon system of the T-90 Tank in the field. IRDE - a DRDO lab has designed and developed the STIK based on the PSQR by the Indian Army. The system is completely indigenous and there is an urgent requirement for this system in the Indian Army

Specifications of New Commander Sight

The new retro-modified Commander sight employs a thermal imager capable of detecting the targets at 8 Kms during day and night and a Laser Ranger Finder (LRF) to find the ranges accurately up to 5 Kms, thereby enhancing its capability to engage target at longer ranges. With the corrections from ballistic software and LRF, the Commander of T-90 can detect, engage and neutralize the targets with phenomenal accuracy.

The system comprises an advanced uncooled thermal imager and a day camera having low light level imaging capability in form-fit configuration. It also incorporates electronic image fusion of thermal imager and day camera. The system is a substantial upgrade to the existing sighting system, which will greatly enhance the night fighting capability of T-90 tank

The indigenously developed sight completed extensive evaluations under field conditions successfully.
