You may be wondering why you would want to refuse a cervical exam.
Here’s the thing. If you want one then get one. I just want you to know that it is not needed. Not for everyone. And it really doesn’t mean much if you are not being induced.
Most of the time it is done out of convenience for your provider or for someone else. Not you!
Your cervix can change rather quickly so it may mess with your mind to hear that it is “doing nothing” or it may equally mess with you mind to hear that it has started doing something.
The thing is, when those wonderful labor hormones kick in, your cervix can do its thing without any help from us!!
This means if you doctor checks you in the office and says that you are not dilated and nothing is happening, guess what?
If you go into labor and oxytocin starts flowing, it doesn’t matter what your cervix was doing at 10 am by evening you could be in full blown labor!
I teach my students and mama members to wait until they are mentally ready if at all to have a cervical exam during pregnancy.
Some of them don’t get any until they are in labor and getting admitted to the hospital!
