I found these strange clusters on trees in Ireland… What are they?

Описание: During a peaceful walk near the River Shannon in Athlone, Ireland 🇮🇪, I noticed something very strange growing on a tree.

At first glance it looked like a huge bird nest or some kind of creature living inside the branches. But the more I looked, the more mysterious it became.

These strange clusters are known as “Witch’s Brooms.”

But what exactly are they?

🌳 What Is a Witch’s Broom?

A Witch’s Broom is a dense cluster of small branches growing from a single point on a tree, creating a shape that looks like a broom or sometimes a bird’s nest.

This unusual growth happens when the normal development of the tree is disrupted, causing many shoots to grow tightly together.

Scientists say this can be caused by several things, including:

Fungal infections
Viruses or bacteria
Tiny insects or mites
Parasitic plants like mistletoe
Genetic mutations in the tree itself

Witch’s Brooms can grow for many years and sometimes become very large, making them easy to spot high in the branches.
