If you've heard about the L.A. new school movement, then you are bound to be familliar with the Good Life Cafe and the groups who have been signed out of there. Well, meet the latest fly MCs out of the seemingly endless Good Life talent pool--the Hip Hop Kclan, consisting of Skar, JXL, and Ellay Khule.
I used to see the various members of the Kclan at the GL and around town at different open-mic spots, but I never heard them perform as a group. They'd wait in the crowd, cheer on the blow-ups and diss the wack rhymers; then, at the end of the night, when the mic would be opened for "go for yours freestyle," these brothas rush the stage and control the mic.
After about Six months of "Where's your demo, G?" (they'd say were working on it, but they were still in the lab), I figured that they probably just loved hip-hop and like to rap, but they weren't really trying to get in the game. Then comes the summer of '93, and with it comes Hip-Hop Kclan with a simple but bomb-ass, self-produced demo demo entitled Livin' Legends(2000).
The three-cut demo showcases their hyper-twisted-metaphorical rapping styles to three different tempos that range from easy jazz-funk to crazy-fast, head-crackin' shit. It's difficult to make comparisons with other rappers or other styles because the flows and the verbal arrangements are so surprisingly unique.
Just for finally coming correct with a proper underground demo I'll give up props. If they learn to keep that funk in the trunk, the'll be collecting a whole lot more.
