In observance of National Girl Child Day, the East Siang District Police organised a special awareness and empowerment programme by symbolically appointing Ms Yapi Pujan, a Class IX student of KGBV Saw Mill, Pasighat, as Officer-in-Charge of the Women Police Station (WPS), Pasighat for a day. The initiative was aimed at promoting gender equality, leadership, and awareness on women and child safety.

The programme began with salutations and a Guard of Honour, followed by a formal briefing and oath-taking ceremony, during which Ms Yapi Pujan pledged to uphold the values of justice, empathy, courage, and service. The entire programme was conducted under the guidance and supervision of Officer-in-Charge, Women Police Station, Pasighat, OC Amum Panyang, who ensured proper orientation, safety, and meaningful exposure throughout the day.

As part of the programme, Ms Yapi Pujan carried out an inspection of the Women Police Station, observed record maintenance, and was briefed on the functioning of the station, including procedures related to women- and child-related cases. OC Amum Panyang and her team explained the role and responsibilities of police officers, emphasizing sensitivity and professionalism in handling such matters.

A special awareness session on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was conducted, during which police officials explained the key provisions of the Act in simple terms. The session focused on child rights, the importance of reporting offences, and the collective role of police, parents, and society in ensuring the safety and protection of children.

The programme also included outreach visits and police patrolling at educational institutions, including Daying Ering Memorial Government Higher Secondary School, Pasighat, and Independent Golden Jubilee Government Higher Secondary School, Pasighat. During the visits, police personnel demonstrated how regular school patrolling is conducted, interaction with school authorities, monitoring of school surroundings, and steps taken to maintain a safe and secure environment for students.

Police officials interacted with students and teachers, sensitizing them on personal safety, legal awareness, and the importance of seeking police assistance whenever required. The student Officer-in-Charge observed firsthand how police practically engage with schools to ensure student safety.

The initiative, conducted under senior supervision, was educational and motivational in nature. The East Siang District Police stated that such programmes are aimed at inspiring young girls, building confidence, and encouraging them to aspire for leadership roles and careers in policing and public service.
