Our universe is filled with complexity—galaxies, gemstones, sharks, supernovae, teapots, and telephones. By identifying commonalities among evolving systems, both living and nonliving, we can develop an expanded law of evolution that describes the emergence of complex phenomena and reflects the creativity of the cosmos.
Michael is an astrobiologist and planetary scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science's Earth & Planets Laboratory. He researches planetary atmospheres, habitability, biosignatures, and the emergence of life. Michael also hosts a podcast called Strange New Worlds, which examines science, technology, and culture through the lens of Star Trek. His other passions include photography, writing, public speaking, and graphic design.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
