In this video CommTank provided an underground tank relining service for Madico, Inc. in Woburn, Ma. The 8,000-gallon chemical underground storage tank is used to store chemicals for specialty films. The chemicals stored in this tank are very corrosive and are the main components in paint stripper. The management was concerned about corrosion in the steel tank and requested that we reline the tank. The liner we used is a NonVolac Epoxy. Because of the fast cure time, the epoxy must be kept on ice to increase the plasticity. The solution must also be mixed thoroughly to ensure the correct chemical reaction. The tank was prepared by sandblasting down to clean steel. It is important to monitor the air quality in an underground tank when working with chemicals like these. We used an LEL meter to check the volatile vapor levels to ensure that it was a safe working environment. Once the epoxy has been mixed the crew has approximately 15 minutes to apply the material. Coordinating each batch is critical to keeping the epoxy in a pliable state. After the coating has been applied all of the equipment has to be doused in water because the cure process generates heat. It's this thermal reaction that gives the epoxy its strength when cured. The tank was recoated the following day and tested before use with a high-voltage lining tester to ASTM Standard D5162-08.
