The Fahnestock Brothers Store, located at the intersection of Baltimore and Middle Streets, was one of the most prominent businesses in Gettysburg at the time of the Civil War. Originally operated by Samuel Fahnestock and later by his three sons, the building was enlarged and renovated just prior to the Civil War. One of its significant features was an observation deck on the western end of the structure. It was here, on July 1, 1863, that General Oliver Otis Howard surveyed the field and learned of the death of General John Reynolds and the fact that he was now in command of all Union forces at Gettysburg. And it was here that the seed first germinated in General Howard’s mind that Cemetery Hill was the most critical piece of ground in the area. Join us as we explore the history of Gettysburg’s Fahnestock House, and the events that occurred on its rooftop observatory.
