The Fokker Dr.I (Dreidecker) is one of the most famous fighter aircraft of the First World War. Designed by Reinhold Platz and built by Fokker-Flugzeugwerke, the triplane entered service in 1917. Powered by a 110 hp Oberursel Ur.II nine-cylinder rotary engine and armed with two synchronized MG 08/15 machine guns, the Dr.I became renowned for its outstanding maneuverability and climb performance. Although it was not the fastest fighter of its era, its agility made it a formidable opponent in close combat. Around 320 aircraft were built.

The Fokker Dr.I achieved legendary status through Manfred von Richthofen, the famous German fighter ace better known as the "Red Baron." Richthofen scored 80 confirmed aerial victories during World War I, making him the highest-scoring fighter pilot of the conflict. His bright red aircraft and remarkable combat record turned him into an aviation icon whose name remains famous more than a century later.

Richthofen flew several aircraft types during the war, but the Fokker Dr.I became forever associated with him. He achieved many of his final victories in the triplane and was flying Fokker Dr.I 425/17 during his last mission on April 21, 1918. The aircraft's combination of exceptional maneuverability and rapid climb rate made it one of the most recognizable fighters in aviation history.

Today, original Fokker Dr.I aircraft no longer exist, but high-quality replicas keep the legend alive at airshows around the world. This stunning example, flown by Alex Stegner at Air Magdeburg 2026, gives us a glimpse of what made the Red Baron's triplane so famous.
