Just about whatever you do to a free-flowing particulate mixture will cause is to segregate according to size. Shaking, stirring, vibrating - and here an example of rotating a mixture in a drum - something that you might feel sure would produce good mixing!
The light coloured particles are around 250 micron sand; the purple particles are around 100 micron sand. The different avalanching behaviour of the two sizes of particles gives rise to the segregation patterns. The patterns are not always reproducible.
