HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Begun in Mallorca during Chopin’s stay with George Sand in 1838–39.
Though dedicated to Robert Schumann, Schumann had earlier dedicated his Kreisleriana to Chopin.
Often seen as the most enigmatic of the four ballades.
Inspired perhaps by another poem by Adam Mickiewicz, though as with the other ballades, this connection is speculative and symbolic.
INTERPRETIVE THOUGHTS
One of the most understated ballades, but very subtle and deep.
Often seen as a reflection of inner conflict or a dream disrupted.
Requires a pianist to balance narrative flow with emotional volatility.
