The Story of Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17)
There was a time of severe drought in the land. People were hungry, and food was very scarce. God sent the prophet Elijah to a poor widow in the town of Zarephath.
When Elijah met her, she was gathering sticks to cook her last meal for herself and her son. She told Elijah, “After we eat this, we have nothing left.”
Elijah asked her to trust God and make him a small piece of bread first, promising her:
“The jar of flour will not run out, and the jug of oil will not run dry until the Lord sends rain.”
Though she was afraid, the widow chose faith over fear. She did as Elijah said.
Day after day, something amazing happened:
The flour never ran out
The oil never became empty
God provided for her and her son throughout the drought.
Lessons from the Story
Faith means trusting God even when you have very little.
Obedience opens the door for God’s provision.
God sees the humble and the forgotten, and He cares deeply for them.
When we trust God with what we have, He multiplies it.
“Those who trust in the Lord will not be put to shame.” (Psalm 25:3)
