Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) for Adults with Disabilities

Описание: New technology has led to advancements in high-tech speech generating devices. This progress offers many benefits but also necessitates increased knowledge, collaboration, and support by all stakeholders. Many young adults may not have had access to communication technologies that have emerged since their exit from school. Furthermore, transition from school to adult setting can be challenging given the need for coordination across many entities and changes in the levels of available support. For older adults these devices were not an available resource. Paul will discuss strategies for successful adaption of AAC systems for adults with developmental disabilities. He will also cover current AAC technology, the evaluation and implementation process, and coordination in AAC treatment during transition from school to adult placement.

Paul Simeone, MA, CCC-SLP, ATP is a licensed speech-language pathologist and a certified assistive technology professional (ATP). In addition to being a private practitioner, he is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at the May Institute’s May Center School in Randolph, MA. Paul specializes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and provides evaluations, consultation, and direct services.

In the fall of 2018, Paul will begin his course of study and clinical research toward a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at Mass General Hospital’s Institute of Health Professions. Paul is also a member of the Massachusetts Speech-Language Hearing Association (MSHA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
