13 October 2023, 7:33 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. From Shenzhen North Station to Houhai—immersive subway experience, first‑person view.
Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story.

Shenzhen North Station: crowds surging.
One of South China‘s largest transport hubs, daily passenger flows immense. Transfer passageways: people hurrying, dragging suitcases, backpacks, staring at phones. No one lingers. Everyone moves fast toward their destination.
———
Some segments crowded, some sparse.
Gradually, I understood why Wong Kar‑wai films Hong Kong the way he does—the city‘s fast pace, the alienation between people. That’s the feeling. His Hong Kong: subway brushes past, brief convenience store stops, solitary figures on street corners. Shenzhen is the same. In a vast city, you share space with tens of thousands—yet maintain distance from every one.
Some say Wong‘s Hong Kong and Lo Ta‑yu’s Taiwan spring from the same source—specific cultural psychologies of their times, a stylized realism rooted in civilizational texture. Shenzhen may not yet have such cultural expression, but the subway‘s alienation feels the same.

There‘s a slogan in Shenzhen: “Progress too slow is still regress.”
At the 7th Shenzhen CPC Congress in 2021, then‑Party Secretary Wang Weizhong stated: “On the track to becoming a global标杆 city, Shenzhen must advance—or fall behind. Slow progress is still regress.” This became a shared understanding, and a joke to ease life‘s exhaustion.
Maybe it’s a joke to cope with fatigue. But the subway captures it: Line 4 to Line 5 to Line 11—everyone rushing, everyone chasing something.
———
Strange tales, indeed.
Nearly two hours: 7:33 p.m. Shenzhen North to 9:20 p.m. Houhai. Stations passed: Minzhi, Shenzhen North, Lingzhi, Bao‘an Center, Qianhai Bay, Nanshan, Houhai… These names—the city’s skeleton.
9:20 p.m.: Houhai. Heart of Shenzhen Bay—China Resources HQ‘s “Spring Bamboo” nearby. Exiting: night fallen, but office towers still glowing.
———
Where do we begin to understand a city?
With its subway—Shenzhen North‘s crowds, transfer passages‘ hurried steps.
With its speed—that slogan “slow progress is still regress,” tired yet determined faces in the carriages.
With its alienation—Wong Kar‑wai’s孤独, and that feeling of brushing past millions, recognizing none.
