Police Officers Demand Apology from Saladino for Attacks on Young's Pension
September 4, 2012 - More than 50 former and current police, fire and other first responders today released a statement attacking Assemblyman Joseph Saladino for criticizing the pension benefits received by Republican Assembly candidate Richard Young.
Statement of First Responders:
"Here in the 9th assembly district, we have an Assemblyman who has never worn the uniform of a Police Office or other first responder service. These dedicated people that risk their lives every day, yet Joseph Saladino had no problem attacking Assembly Candidate Rich Young for collecting a pension that was granted after nearly being killed in the line of duty.
"At first, doctors thought Rich Young would never walk again. His back was broken in three places and his knees were rendered useless. After months in the hospital followed by numerous surgeries and years of physical therapy, Rich finally recovered enough to get on with his life.
"But Rich Young could no longer stand the rigors of being a police office and was forced into retirement.
"Today, Rich Young is running for Assembly. Instead of talking about the issues, he has come under attack by Assemblyman Joseph Saladino.
"Saladino has referred to Rich Young as a "double-dipper", meaning that if elected, Mr. Young would receive the salary of an assemblyman and would still be receiving his police retirement pension.
"This allegation is an insult.
"It is an insult to retired police officers, fire department retirees and emergency first responders. For Joe Saladino to attack Rich Young for the pension he earned by risking and almost losing his life is an outrage.
"We put our lives on the line to protect our communities. That last thing we need is a sitting assemblyman attacking our service when one of us is injured on the job.
"We demand that Joe Saladino retract his statement and apologize to retired police, fire and first responders everywhere. And he owes an apology to Rich Young who is simply exercising the great American right to run for public office, just like Joe Saladino did.
"Thank you very much."
Sincerely,
Kevin Crumlish, Retired NYPD Detective
