In today’s video, we’re diving into one of the most important- and often overlooked- stages of the drawing process: the block-in.

I’ll walk you through what the block-in really is, why it matters so much, and how to create a solid foundation you can confidently build the rest of your drawing on.

You’ll see me work through a graphite still life from the very beginning, focusing first on structure, placement, proportions, and overlaps before moving into developing a full tonal range using alternative shading techniques.✏️

I always like to remind beginners that no amount of shading or detail will fix a weak foundation. If we rush through those early stages, we usually end up spending much more time correcting things later, and it can lead to a lot of unnecessary frustration.

Practicing your block-ins builds real confidence. It gives you the ability to build your drawings from the ground up, rather than feeling like you have to lean on outlines, grids, or tracing all the time to make things work.
