Written in 1954 by Arthur ‘Guitar Boogie’ Smith as “Feudin’ Banjos,” this version was memorably featured in John Boorman’s gripping box office and critical success “Deliverance,” starring Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox. Cox and actor Billy Redden were shown playing the bluegrass number, actually performed in this soundtrack recording by Eric Weissberg (banjo) and Steve Mandell (guitar). As it was used in the movie without Smith’s permission or writer acknowledgement, he sued and eventually received composer credit and royalties.
Most singles were issued in this 2:10 edit form, though some were released with the complete 3:17 version ( • Dueling Banjos ). The 45 label initially included Weissberg’s name only in “arranged by” small print below the title (with the movie name in bold print), but later pressings more prominently displayed his name as the primary artist.
