The demand for medical gender-affirming treatments in children and adolescents has surged in the last few years, even as it has also become one of the country’s more polarizing issues, with some states even outlawing the procedures entirely. Recent data shows a massive influx of young patients seeking gender-affirming health care. From 2017 to 2021, more than 17,000 patients aged 6-17 had initiated hormone or puberty blockers. Most major American medical groups support gender-affirming treatment and procedures for children and adolescents who want it. But now, some prominent doctors in the field are urging the medical community to slow down.
