Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) was a British nurse, social reformer, and statistician, best known as the founder of modern nursing. She became famous for her work during the Crimean War, where she cared for wounded soldiers and greatly improved hospital conditions by promoting cleanliness, proper ventilation, and hygiene. Her efforts significantly reduced death rates, earning her the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp,” because she often checked on patients at night.
After the war, Florence Nightingale worked to reform healthcare systems and establish nursing as a respected profession. She founded the Nightingale School of Nursing in London in 1860, which set high standards for nursing education. She also used statistics to show how sanitation affected health, influencing hospital design and public health policies. Her dedication, compassion, and scientific approach made a lasting impact on medicine and nursing worldwide.
