On today's Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at the 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile by AMT/ERTL. This is a model car unboxing video.
This "executive supercar" flashes a distinctive look with special white paint and gold stripes. The "executive supercar" was the '69 Hurst Olds with a huge 455 C.I. V-8 engine, improved transmission, special white paint and gold stripes, massive hood scoop and rear spoiler. The '69 Hurst Olds was capable of pushing a quarter mile in 14 seconds and reaching a top speed of over 125 mph.
The Hurst/Olds returned for the 1969 model year. The biggest change was the switch from the silver and black paint scheme of '68 to a new Firefrost gold on white paint scheme. This would be the primary paint scheme for many Hurst/Olds models of later years. Instead of the dual ram air scoops under the front bumper that was used in '68 and other ram air '69s, the H/O received a functional "mailbox" fiberglass hood scoop with H/O 455 on each side. A spoiler was mounted on the trunk and the car sat on unique 15x7 chrome SSII rims with Goodyear F60x15 Polyglas tires. The exterior was finished off with a pair of English racing mirrors, H/O emblems on the front fenders and deck lid, blacked out 442 grilles, and black hand-applied pinstripes.
Interior modifications included a different wood veneer on the mini-console, painted gold stripes on the headrests, and a Hurst/Olds emblem on the glove-box door.
The 455 cubic-inch Rocket V8 (W46) was rated at 380 horsepower and 500 lb/ft of torque. The engine received a unique intake manifold, chrome steel valve covers, and a special vacuum operated air cleaner lid to allow cold air from the hood scoop into the carburetor. This was backed up by a specially calibrated code OH Turbo 400 transmission and 3.42 gears for non-A/C cars or 3.08 gears for cars with A/C. Optional 3.91 gears were available only for non-A/C cars.
This kit can be built one of two ways. Either as the daring Hurst Olds performance package (Stock) or with some dress up items such as American Racing (or are they Craiger) mag wheels, Goodyear Blue Streak racing slicks and custom valve covers.
The 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile by AMT ERTL is an excellent representation of this car. This model kit came out in 1988 as the Oldsmobile 442 and was originally produced by MPC. AMT ERTL bought the molds the following year (Along with MPC) and added in the Hurst performance parts, such as the hood scoop and rear spoiler.
This model kit has over 100 parts and includes many separate pieces to make up the whole model kit. Modelers are treated to such features as a choice between Custom or Factory Stock wheels, steering front wheels, a super detailed engine with power steering pump, cylinder heads with rocker arms, an engine block with cylinders in position, a dashboard with floor pedals, and many other highly detailed suspension components.
The instructions for the AMT/ERTL 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile are easy to follow and include color call-outs for the engine block, wheels and interior, suspension, manifolds and exhaust pipes and other such items. If you wish to match colors to Oldsmobile factory specifications, your local General Motors dealership or autobody repair shop should be able to assist you with these paint codes.
The detail on the plastic parts are crisp and clear and go together quite easily. This kit features an interior bucket with separate bucket seats, 3 piece console, steering wheel and dash board with clutch and brake pedals that you glue on.
The chrome on this model kit is excellent and really enhances the look of the finished car. The grill includes the quad headlights as separate pieces just like the real car. This allows the model builder to paint the grill without getting paint on the headlight chrome. To finish off the chrome on the body, I recommend using Bare Metal Foil and a brand new no.11 hobby blade.
Overall, the AMT/ERTL 1969 Hurst Olds model car kit is an excellent model kit that goes together very well. The kit overall is so great that it is a joy to build. If you can find any of these kits, I highly recommend you get one!
