Here are the first set of four sides cut by this marvelous dance band from New Orleans for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Armand J. Piron's New Orleans Orchestra (aka Piron's Novelty Orchestra) cut a number of sides for Victor, Columbia, Okeh, Banner and even possibly Edison during their residency at the Cotton Club and the Roseland Ballroom in New York City from late 1923 to late 1924. The band, however, hailed from the Crescent City and was the first New Orleans group to have records made for a major label. Among the ranks are Piron himself on violin, the fantastic Lorenzo Tio Jr. on clarinet at Tenor Saxophone, Peter Bocage on Trumpet and his brother Charles on Banjo.

"New Orleans Wiggle" starts off with a great piano break by Steve Lewis, and flows through two quick and yet laid back statements of the A-Section (Tio Jr. really kicks things off the 2nd time). Then Piron and Bocage take the first time through the B-Section followed by the whole band again with Tio Jr. taking some fantastic breaks. The C-Section has some great sax soli style breaks followed by a repeat by the whole band in tour de-fource.

"Mama's Gone, Goodbye" is more of a slow drag but still moves along quite nicely, thanks to the great rhythm section. The melody is stated nicely in duet form again this time by Piron and Tio Jr., with the poor acoustic quality making it difficult to discern who is who! This is followed by a fantastic muted solo by Bocage with piano background by Lewis. The whole band takes it out for a most enjoyable finale with great blocks played by Cottrelle.
