Ibrahim Traoré, the current leader of Burkina Faso, was the target of a major assassination and coup plot planned for January 3, 2026.

The alleged mastermind is Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, a former lieutenant colonel and ex-president who ruled Burkina Faso briefly after a 2022 military coup.

Damiba was arrested in Togo, where he had been living in exile after being overthrown by Traoré.

Togolese authorities reportedly detained, questioned, and extradited Damiba back to Burkina Faso, though official confirmation from Ouagadougou is still pending.

Authorities claim the plot aimed to assassinate Traoré, eliminate senior junta leaders, and disable a key military drone base critical for counter-insurgency operations.

Investigators say the operation was coordinated from abroad, with Damiba allegedly responsible for planning, funding, and recruiting both civilians and military personnel.

A senior Air Force officer, Captain Kouli Dei Prosper, reportedly confessed involvement, admitting he received nearly $15,000 and followed direct orders from Damiba.

According to investigators, Prosper was contacted through the Zangi messaging app and tasked with attacking the Sapone drone base, which would have severely weakened national defenses.

Burkinabè authorities allege that a large portion of the funding came from Ivory Coast, including one transfer of about $125,000, a claim strongly denied by Abidjan.

The accusations align with previous claims by Burkina Faso that destabilization efforts were being organized from Ivory Coast and neighboring states.

Since taking power, Traoré has survived at least 18 alleged assassination or coup attempts, expelled French forces, strengthened ties with Russia, and formed the Alliance of Sahel States with Mali and Niger.

Analysts warn that while this specific threat has been neutralized, Burkina Faso’s strategic position and repeated coup attempts mean instability remains a serious regional risk, affecting the entire Sahel.
