Agricultural soil is not just a layer of "dirt"; it is a living, dynamic organism essential for plant nutrition, water filtration, and ecosystem sustainability. Good agricultural soil should have a structure that supports and nourishes plant roots and provides them with balanced water. The fundamental elements determining agricultural soil fertility are: 1. Physical Structure (Texture) of the Soil: Soil consists of a mixture of sand, clay, and silt. Ideal agricultural soil is generally called "loamy" soil. Sandy Soils: They drain water quickly, are easy to work, but cannot retain nutrients. Clay Soils: They have a high water-holding capacity but are very difficult to work and aerate. Loamy Soils: They are a balanced mixture of sand, clay, and silt; they both retain water and allow roots to breathe. 2. Chemical Properties and pH Value: The acidity or alkalinity of the soil (pH) determines whether the plant can absorb elements from the soil. Ideal pH: For most cultivated plants, a pH between $6.0 and $7.5 (neutral or slightly acidic) is suitable. Nutrients: The soil needs to contain essential elements (macronutrients) such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), as well as trace elements such as iron and zinc. 3. Organic Matter and Humus: The "vitality" of the soil depends on the amount of organic matter. Humus, which is decomposed plant and animal remains,: Increases the soil's water-holding capacity. Makes the soil more porous, improving aeration. Supports microorganism activity, accelerating the nutrient cycle.
